As Andy said, Don Henley grew up in Lindale, Texas. Lindale's school mascot is the eagles. To a greater extent, Henley went to school at the University of North Texas, whose nickname at the time was the Eagles.

Over the years other possibilities have emerged and perhaps the real reason has begun to be lost in the fog of history. One version is that Bernie Leadon suggested the name because of his interest in Hopi Indian mythology.

Other versions credit Leadon for other reasons. J.D. Souther and Glenn Frey are also possible namers of the band during a drug-feuled trip in the Mojave Desert.
