Sugar Hill Gang, they performed "Rapper's Delight" a year before Run DMC.

Run DMC were the second, they were more popular and that is why people remember them. Most people have never even heard of the Sugar Hill Gang. Run DMC was the first "major" rap group on American Bandstand.

Rolling Stone featured Run-D.M.C. on their December 4, 1986 cover. I could find no cover featuring Sugar Hill Gang from 1978 through 1989.
