Somewhat to my surprise, I discovered that a few sites offered the answer to this question. You need about 345 squirts to get a gallon of milk:

So 11 mils a squirt which sounds about right. Actually, I should perhaps have said teat squeezes as a cow doesn't take kindly to having them pulled.
I've also read that cows were traditionally milked on the right hand side but I don't know the truth of this.
Of course, most cows are milked artificially now anyway.
