I just found this site
www.pbs.org/wgbh/buildingbig/wonder/structure/eiffel_tower.html
and it says you can see 43 miles from the top on a clear day AND that there are 674 steps to the second stage. I'm happy now.

Can see farther in winter than in summer as well. The colder air is less dense and therefore more clear.
