A Neapolitan is a native or resident of Naples. So why then is it called 'Neapolitan' ice cream?

Got it! It's a variant os something called spumoni (sounds more like a disease) originally made in Naples. https://wikipedia.com/wiki/Neapolitan_Ice_Cream Funnily enough, I'm listening to a prog on Radio 3 about the Appian Way - which ran from Rome to Naples!

'napolitano(a) is the Italian adjective to describe anything from Napoli.Like Naples is the English for Napoli so Neopolitan is the English for napolitano-I think.

Means New City in origin. Apart from being three coloured ice cream, Neapolitan can also mean ice cream with eggs as well as milk products (Webster's Dictionary).
