Brecqou is probably the smallest, it is privately owned by the Barclay brothers who have a gothic-styled castle there, built fairly recently.

Sue, I dislike flying; are the Channel Islands a good place for a holiday? I've heard the climate is rather more "Mediterranean" than on mainland Britain.

Great, but then I am biased. All the Islands have different characters. Not somewhere for a really cheap holiday (can be cheaper to go to America!), in fact they can be pricey especially if you fly. There are some good packages available, the fast ferry to Jersey takes about 4 hours, slower one a couple of hours more. Guernsey has a pretty town, Jersey has more 'countryside' as Guernsey has a lot of ribbon development and glass houses. I have never been to Alderney but it is that much smaller than Guernsey (and has Ian Botham as a resident), Sark is lovely and without cars, Herm is very quiet with just the one hotel.
