In Mary Shelley's novel, Victor Frankenstein does not have an assistant.
Isolation
Victor Frankenstein, in both the movie versions and Mary Shelley's novel, isolates himself from his family and society in general. One exception is found in Whale's movie version where Frankenstein is not completely alone: he has his assistant, Fritz.

Depending what movie version you're looking at, the assistant might be Egor, Igor, or Fritz. When the question doesn't specify, I tend to go with the original.
