Scott McKenzie and John Phillips were members of a folk trio called the Journeymen in the early 60s. The third member was Dick Weisman. McKenzie and Phillips had worked together previously in a Jazz-based quartet called The Smoothies.
Actress Mackenzie Phillips, John's daughter with his first wife, Sue, was named after Scott McKenzie.
