Approx. 17 in a 5th bottle. Depends on what your "standard" bottle is, doesn't it?

One shot = 1.5 ounces. One fifth = 25.6 ounces. 17 shots + .1 oz. You go, Robboy.

Ok, state law applies here. In some states you aren't allowed to serve a drink with more than an ounce of alcohol in it, so in those states a shot would be one ounce. In my state, no such law exists, but a standard shot is 1 ounce. (Unless you know the bartender.)

And I'm surprised you people pick a 5th as a standard bottle. Maybe I'm just a lush, but when I buy alcohol, I don't buy anything smaller than a 750 ml unless it's something special and expensive. Of course, the only alcohol I have in my house right now is a bottle of Kaluah my dad brought me from Mexico, because having an infant can put a bit of a halt to the partying, but still..

Beg to dif. Any standard barkeep's book will tell a shot is an ounce and a half, regardless of what state you're in while reading it. Personally, I always seek out the Irish bars where the shot tends to get much larger as the evening wears on.

Hi Loth, here's where I got 1.5 oz as a shot:

and according to the same page, 750ml is a fifth.

p.s. In Utah we have metered shots, which are indeed 1oz. But I refuse to use Utah liquor laws as a standard.

True again; a fifth simply means a fifth of a gallon.

I guess I was led astray about the fifth. I was led to believe it referred to the smaller 200ml bottles because they were a fifth of a liter. I've never looked into it myself.

As to the shots, I'm not disputing the rightness of the 1.5oz measure. In fact, 1.5 seems on the skimpy side to me. I'm just saying that if I go down to a bar and order a shot, I'm getting an ounce of alcohol, unless I know the bartender. ;-)

The "standard" bottle in the UK until very recently was 1 and 1/4 pints.
Measures were sold in 1/6th of a gill.
There are 4 gills in a pint.
So a bottle contained 24 measures.

Nowadays, they are 70cl or 75cl and a measure is 25ml. This gives 28 or 30 measures.
