At the risk of showing my age, the answer is coonskin caps, which were inspired by the Walt Disney series of Davy Crockett TV adventures that starred Fess Parker as the Tennesee frontiersman and Buddy Ebsen as his sidekick.

I think this is probably the earliest craze that I can remember clearly - Davy Crockett hats.
