Is Winnie the Pooh based on any particular type of bear?

The original Winnie the Pooh was based on the toy bear owned by Christopher Robin, son of AA Milne. The original bear is quite different to the one we are used to seeing today.

I believe the name "Winnie the Pooh" comes from a bear from a Canadian zoo.

Actually the real bear was in a zoo in Winnipeg, Manitoba. That is how it got its name, the owner was a soldier and I believe the bear was a black bear.
