I'm not sure why it's taken more than 9 years to get an answer to this question, but I presume peasypod's question refers to the 1844 novel Martin Chuzzlewit:

The American setting of Chuzzlewit was prompted by Dickens' first trip to America in 1842 (his impressions were largely unfavourable!), as a result of which he published his non-fiction travelogue 'American Notes' later that year:
