Wigan pier was a small wooden jetty which was given the nickname by locals who thought it would be amusing to have a pier in a landlocked town. The name caught on with music hall comedians who kept the joke going for years. When George Orwell wrote his book called "The Road to Wigan Pier" he travelled to Wigan to see the pier which by then no longer existed. From old photographs he estimated it to have been about twenty feet long.
