Why is unsalted butter normally more expensive than salted butter?

Because it doesn't keep as long. Anything with a short shelf life will cost more as more of it will go off and have to be thrown out. The salt gives long life to things like salt meat and salt fish, and longer life to butter than it would have otherwise.

I don't find that it IS more expensive. My store brands are always the same cost for sweet or unsalted. My feeling is it's more to do with health consciousness than shelf life.

Once again, depends on where you're buying. Around me (northwestern NY state) they are sold side by side, for the same price. Guess you live and shop somewhere else...
