Why does Planters' Mr. Peanut wear a monocle?

I expect they thought it added to his debonair image. He's also wearing spats which are in the same sort of style, and were very much the fashion when the logo was created.

Actually, Mr. Peanut has no ears that could hold up a set of eye glasses, hence the monocle becomes required.
