Any reason why movie screens are perforated with those tiny holes?

I found this explanation online:
The screens were perforated with thousands of tiny holes to allow the sound from the huge speakers located on stage behind the screen to reach the audience.
Nowadays, there are speakers all over the theater.

Saw a great presentation on the technology of the sound system employed by IMAX theatres while at the Udvar-Hazy Centre of the National Air and Space Museum outside of Washington, DC. It expanded on MrsAce's comments. Great show if anyone gets the opportunity to visit.
