Having stopped consulting the top of my head and done a bit of checking, it seems that the precise number of offspring varies from species to species, and can be anything from 2-12: in the nine-banded armadillo (genus Dasypus) it *is* "nearly always" quads. But whatever the number, they are ALWAYS identical and develop from a single fertilized ovum.
