ESPN started in Connecticut,and it stands for eastern sports programming network.

It was entertainment. While they started in Bristol, their immediate aim was to be national, as they were one of the first national cable channels. It was originally the Entertainment Sports Network. Before they got all the high paying football and other sports packages, they basically spent their programming on bad pool tourneyments and frisbee football tourneyments.
