Captain Lawrence Oates.

Oates was a member of Robert Falcon Scott's expedition to the South Pole. Crippled with frostbite, he walked out of their tent into a blizzard, sacrificng his own life to give his comrades a better chance of suviving without him.

"I shall be going outside now. I may be gone some time." was also said by the 5th Doctor Who (Peter Davison) in "Earthshock" when he was annoyed by arguing with Adric.
