The world premiere took place December 15, 1939, in Atlanta (Margaret Mitchell's hometown), where the governor declared the day an official state holiday. The site of the premiere was Loew's Grand Theater on Peachtree Street, which was made to look like the Twelve Oaks mansion and featured a two-story photo of Gable and Leigh. Tickets cost $10 but sold out and were scalped for more than $200 each. Nearly 1 million people visited Atlanta for the premiere--300,000 lined the streets the night of the event, and 12,000 showed up at the theater to see Gable in a tuxedo, Leigh draped in gold lamé and de Havilland in black velvet. Because of the Loew's limited space, only 2,500 people were in the audience
All of the major stars of the film (and others) - Clark Gable, Vivien Leigh, Laurence Olivier, Olivia de Havilland, Evelyn Keyes, Carol Lombard and Claudette Colbert attended. The theater held 2,019 people on opening night, each of whom paid $10 per seat, with the money going to charity. Producers were also in attendance. The next week, there was another premiere in New York.
