Michelle Elizabeth Tanner (b. November 1986) is the youngest character on the show, and is played by twins Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, who alternate unnoticeably in the role.

There are exactly 4 episodes in which the girls appear together, but otherwise they split up the roles fairly evenly. For example, if one got an ice-cream eating scene in one episode, the other would get a cake-eating scene in the next, etc. Ashley Olsen was used more for the serious roles, like when Papouli died, or whenever the character needed to cry or be serious. Mary-Kate Olsen was used more for the comedy. In the first few episodes of the first season, however, Ashley Olsen was used to play Michelle. Mary-Kate only began the character one time when Ashley was sick. From then on, they shared the role.

Kids under the age of 18 in the acting business are only allowed to work a certain amount of hours each day, so in order to get everything filmed, they had to alternate scenes depending on who can say the lines better or who has better facial expressions. There are roles where they act at the same time. In the sixth season, the girls started to become more different from each other in appearances and height, so they were going to get rid of one of the twins. All of the cast wouldn't let it, so the show went on with both of them.
