Geraldine Anne Ferraro received the nomination of the Democratic Party to run for Vice President of the United States in 1984. I do believe that's as close as we'll get.
Thanks all for the information. Its seems that Hilary is somewhat of a pioneer.

I can't refrain from mentioning Margaret Chase Smith, the first woman whose name was placed in nomination at a presidential convention -- 1964.
However, I don't think any of the campaigns or nominations before Ferraro's nomination as a vice-presidential candidate can be termed "serious," since until comparatively recently, the possibility that a woman might end up as president simply did not seem a realistic one:
Let's face it, Linda Jenness didn't do badly. Female and standing for the Socialist Workers' Party in America? She definitely deserves an award for bravery.
