The best I can do is suggest that some Classics major got himself a job at Colgate-Palmolive, or its advertising agency, in the late 1940's. After all, the "Iliad"'s Ajax was a big, strong guy. It wouldn't be too much of a stretch to decide that his would be a great name for a cleaning product. It's also short and punchy -- always a plus:
Mr. Jim Morrison used an Ajax jingle at the end of one of his band's more popular songs "Touch Me", it is barely audible:
At the end of the song, Morrison can be heard saying, "Stronger than dirt," which was the slogan of the Ajax household cleaning company, supposedly because the music of "Touch Me" resembled that of an Ajax commercial and as a mocking criticism of his band's selling out to Buick by letting "Light My Fire" appear in one of its commercials.
And in case anyone is wondering, the Dutch football team (founded in 1900) was also named after the ancient warrior.
Whether the Corsican capital Ajaccio was named after him is disputed.
