Yes, if one scores high enough on the PSAT, one qualifies as a National Merit Scholar.

Well, actually, PSAT results function as part of an initial screening process. Other qualifications must be met.

It can also be used as a guide in looking for colleges.

Oh--thanks, Frankie. I didn't realize you were referring to his answer.

Our school also uses it internally to check up on how well we're doing at teaching our students, adjusting curricula and/or methods as indicated.

To add to Trevor's response, students receive invitations and information from colleges based on their PSAT scores.
