Jerry Potts was what people called a "half-breed". He was born into the Blood Tribe. He later married two members of the Piegan tribe named Panther Woman and Spotted Killer. He considered himself a Piegan but he kept his Indian name, Kyi-yo-Kosi, which means Bear Child, that had been given to him by the Blood tribe. He was very resourceful and was possibly the smartest trader on the prairies at the time.

Well, at least 15 people posted "Jerry Potts" today without a reference. Cowboyken was the only person to add any information to that. If all those people knew the answer was Jerry Potts, you would think one would have some kind of a reference.

"Jerry Potts was the 'Davy Crockett of Western Canada.' …  Potts doesn't get much ink as a Canadian hero, but he should  ...  Rodger D. Touchie tells [this] story admirably." -- David Bly, Calgary Herald
The West was a lawless domain when Jerry Potts was born into the Upper Missouri fur trade in 1838. The son of a Scottish father and a Blood mother, he was given the name Bear Child by his Blood tribe for his bravery and tenacity while he was still a teen. In 1874, when the North West Mounted Police first marched west and sat lost and starving near the Canada–U.S. border, it was Potts who led them to shelter. Over the next 22 years he played a critical role in the peaceful settlement of the Canadian West.

Fort McKenzie, Montana, birth Jerry Potts died July 14, 1896 son John Potts a Scott who died 1850's who worked for the American Fur Company and a Piegan woman or as others say a Blood known as Crooked Back who died 1840's. Jerry Potts worked for the Canadian Mounted Police for 22 years. One epitaph says Jerry Potts the Metis was like Moses, he led the Mounted Police out of the desert and brought them to the end of their difficulties. This is not far from the truth as he made all the major decisions in the management of the southern Alberta Mounted Police this century.
