There's a difference between mayonnaise and salad dressing and salad cream. Salad dressing is usually an oil and vinegar based mixture which is very often sort of clearish with bits of herb floating around. (I've just been reminded by this that I need to mix some more - I don't buy it as it's much cheaper and far nicer tasting if you mix your own). Mayonnaise contains egg and oil and is rather more of the texture of tomato sauce than salad dressing, which is runny. Salad cream is a product that Peasy would not approve of. It's a sort of British take on mayonnaise, but with much cheaper ingredients and more vinegar. Funnily enough, quite a few people here don't like real mayonnaise but love salad cream. I use both in different situations. Mayonnaise if I've got a salad containing lettuce that's not what I approve of - in other words flat stuff or iceberg rather than batavia and other interesting ones (which get the benefit of one of my own salad dressing recipes). Salad cream as a side dip for chips (fries to Americans). Considering what the Americans tend to do to food things, I find it odd that salad cream is British not American and that it's not known over there. Whipped Salad Dressing doesn't sound like a brand, but a product description - possibly trying to avoid confusion with Hellmans or Bests.
The British are very fond of mayonnaise in another form - tartare sauce which contains capers and and doesn't need to have onions in it unless it's of very poor standard. This is served with fish, and you can get sachets or dips in chip shops and fish and chip restaurants.

There is a product called "Miracle Whip" in the U.S., which is similar to mayonnaise. It seems to have more sugar and vinegar than mayonnaise (and more calories). People either love Miracle Whip, or hate it!

Miracle Whip is NOT proper mayonnaise. I'm one of the people who hates it.
Here in the U.S., Tartar Sauce is regarded as a different item from mayonnaise -- I'm not sure how many people realize that it has a mayonnaise base -- as are all salad dressings. (We don't use the term "salad cream.") Dressings come in many varieties and are made by several companies. They range from vinaigrettes of various kinds to thicker, mayonnaise-like dressings with different types of flavorings.
As in the U.K., tartar sauce in the U.S. is almost exclusively served with fish. I make my own mayonnaise and tartar sauce for the most part, and I'm good at aioli, a garlic-flavored mayonnaise. However, I admit to a fondness for Hellman's on a ham and Swiss cheese sandwich.

Miracle Whip sounds like what we call salad cream.
