According to Apple, the 8GB iPod can hold up to 2,000 songs, up to 7,000 photos, up to 8 hours of video, or some of each.

It claims that it can hold up to 2000, however this would be based on each song being the mean 4mb each. With compression rates what they are, most songs do average out to be around this size, however Apple doesn't take into account the size of the software on the Ipod itself, and this decreases the amount it will hold, but not by very much. You will probably be able to count on getting around 1800-1900 average length songs at 128 compression.
