Nice one, gtho4. I didn't check the Russian ones..... A Yay for that one, but there's still the non-Slavic one I was looking for. No tricks in this - straightforward question (but I did expect that people would go for the USA states...). The state in question and the capital are spelled the same in the local language and in English. Probably because we've never owned it, invaded it, rescued it, or used it as a holiday destination very much. The only connection I've got with it is that a cousin of mine used to manage an Indian restaurant two or three nights a week there.

In French you have Algerie/Alger, but it's still two letters, not one.
And of course, in Portuguese, Brasil/Brasilia, but it' s still two letters difference.
If you consider Khabaravsk/Khabarovsky a correct answer, I have to tell you that Krasnoyarsk/Krasnoyarsky is just as correct.
Yay! for author. The cantons of Switzerland are the states that make up the federation. Just as with the States of the USA and the Lander of Germany, some were originally independent states.

Baloo, I would have to say there was a trick to it!
You're right, of course.
"The twenty-six cantons of Switzerland are the states of the federal state of Switzerland. Historically each canton in the historical confederation was a sovereign state, with its own borders, army and currency until the current federal structure was established in 1848."
