Human Organs.
Human Organs and Ebay: A Combination That Could Save Lives
by J. H. Huebert

The Collegian
September 24, 1999

A few weeks ago, online auction site Ebay decided to block an auction for "one fully functional human kidney," for sale by the kidney’s original owner. By the time Ebay cancelled the auction, the high bid was already $5.7 million.

If that high price tells us anything, it’s that many people value kidneys very highly, especially if they’re in need of one for a transplant. Who could be blamed for spending millions on a kidney, if it were a matter of life and death? If anything is worth $5.7 million, surely it’s a life-saving kidney.

Because of its varied uses, special properties, and rareness, musk is reputed to be the most expensive animal product available, valued at up to $45,000 (USD) per kilogram. And one gland contains about 28 g of musk.

Pearls are likely the answer. The most valuable pearl is the La Peregrina pearl that once belonged to Mary I of England. Richard Burton bought it for $37000 in 1969 and in 2011 it ended up selling for $11 million. It weighs about 11 g.
