There are many different numbers being thrown around. However, according to the United Nation's World Food Programme, one billion grains of rice could feed 50,000 people for one day. Adjustments can be made to this equation in order to accomodate a child's specific needs.
By the way, this is a great site. Visitors to the website are presented with a word and four definitions. If a user selects the correct definition, FreeRice.com donates 20 grains of rice through the United Nations. In exchange for advertisements on the website, various corporations such as Apple Inc., Toshiba, Fujitsu, Reader's Digest, Liz Claiborne, Radisson, Macy's, American Express, Time Life, and Office Depot donate the money necessary to pay for the rice and other costs to run FreeRice.
