The song was originally composed by traveling English minstrals. The original song talked about the three skulls of the three wise men being carried on three ships into Cologne Cathedral in Germany. Over time the lyrics have been changed, including various Bible characters. The most popular speaks of Mary and her Christ child sailing into Bethlehem.
