The sextant was a tool that was used consistently for navigation. Today, it is still being used to navigate the most difficult conditions. The sextant was designed with the knowledge of the weather and ocean currents.

Sextants can usually be found on ships today for emergency purposes, where they come in quite handy. On Gemini 12, when certain navigational systems failed to work on the spacecraft, Buzz Aldrin used a sextant to dock his craft with an unmanned probe - a method he had learned in the military.
NOTE: The conclusion drawn from the Buzz Aldrin quotes is that NASA uses the stars to navigate to the Moon, based on readings from the astronauts' space sextant. http://www.freelists.org/archives/geocentrism/02-2005/msg00023.html
